Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the freezer before accessing the evaporator fan. Beware of sharp metal edges and ice.
Steps to address E7:
- 1. Access the fan: Remove shelves and the rear interior panel to expose the evaporator and fan assembly.
- 2. Check for ice blockage: Look for ice buildup around the fan shroud or blades. If present, fully defrost the area using towels and warm air (no sharp tools).
- 3. Spin the fan by hand: With power off, gently spin the fan blade. It should move freely without grinding. If it is stiff or seized, the motor is likely bad.
- 4. Inspect wiring: Check the fan motor connector and harness for loose pins or corrosion. Reseat the connector.
- 5. Test the motor: Disconnect the fan and measure resistance across the motor leads. An open circuit indicates a failed motor. On DC fans, verify correct voltage from the control board when powered (this test should be done carefully; if unsure, call a technician).
- 6. Replace the fan motor: If defective, remove mounting screws, transfer the fan blade to the new Kenmore-compatible evaporator fan motor, and reinstall.
- 7. Reassemble and test: Reinstall the rear panel, restore power, and confirm the fan runs and E7 clears after a short period.
Note: If the fan tests good but does not receive power, the main control board may be at fault and should be professionally evaluated.
