Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the freezer before removing the evaporator cover or working near the defrost system.
- Step 1 – Access evaporator area: Remove shelves and the rear interior panel to expose the evaporator coil and attached thermistor.
- Step 2 – Inspect thermistor: Locate the small sensor clipped to the evaporator tubing. Check for broken wires or a cracked sensor body.
- Step 3 – Check connections: Follow the thermistor wires to the connector. Reseat the connector and inspect for corrosion.
- Step 4 – Replace if damaged: If the thermistor appears damaged or the E3 code persists after reseating, replace the evaporator thermistor with a compatible KitchenAid part.
If replacing the thermistor does not clear E3, the main control board may not be reading the sensor correctly and should be evaluated by a professional.
