Possible Causes
Door left open or frequently opened, Evaporator fan not running, Condenser coils clogged with dust, Failed temperature sensor (freezer thermistor)
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power before removing any panels or working near wiring or fans.
- Step 1 – Check door closure: Ensure the door is fully closed and the gasket is sealing. Remove items that may be preventing a tight seal.
- Step 2 – Inspect for warm air leaks: Look for torn or deformed door gaskets. If you see gaps, temporarily improve the seal by gently warming and reshaping the gasket with a hair dryer on low, keeping it moving and away from plastic trim.
- Step 3 – Clean condenser coils: Unplug the freezer. Pull it away from the wall and locate the condenser coils (usually underneath or at the back). Use a coil brush and vacuum to remove dust and pet hair. Restore power and allow 24 hours for temperatures to stabilize.
- Step 4 – Verify evaporator fan operation: With the door open, press and hold the door switch to simulate a closed door. Listen for the evaporator fan running inside the freezer. If it is silent or only hums, the fan motor may be faulty.
- Step 5 – Clear the alarm: Press and hold the Alarm Reset button for 3–5 seconds. Monitor the temperature with an appliance thermometer over the next 24 hours.
If the HI alarm persists even though the freezer is actually cold (0°F or below), the freezer thermistor or main control board may be defective and should be tested with a multimeter by a qualified technician.
