Freezer displays E5; compressor may not start or may short-cycle; unit fails to reach set temperature.
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Critical safety: Unplug the freezer before accessing the compressor compartment. Do not attempt sealed system repairs (cutting or recharging refrigerant) unless you are a certified refrigeration technician.
Steps to address E5 (compressor start fault):
- 1. Listen for behavior: When powered, you may hear a click from the compressor area followed by a brief hum and another click. This suggests the start device is tripping.
- 2. Access rear lower panel: Remove the rear service panel at the bottom of the Leisure freezer to expose the compressor and electrical box.
- 3. Inspect start device: The start relay/PTC and overload protector are mounted on the compressor terminals under a plastic cover. Remove the cover and check for burnt smell, discoloration, or cracked housing.
- 4. Test start relay/PTC: With the unit unplugged, remove the start device and shake it gently; if it rattles or shows signs of burning, replace it. Measure resistance according to the service manual if available.
- 5. Check start capacitor (if fitted): Some Leisure models use an external capacitor. Discharge it safely, then test with a capacitance meter. Replace if out of tolerance or bulging.
- 6. Replace faulty components: Fit a compatible Leisure compressor start relay/PTC and compressor start capacitor (if used). Ensure all connections are tight and correctly oriented.
- 7. Inspect compressor: If the compressor is extremely hot to the touch, allow it to cool for 30–60 minutes before retesting. Persistent overheating may indicate internal compressor failure.
- 8. Check main PCB relay: If the compressor never receives power (no hum, no click), the main control PCB relay may be faulty. This requires PCB replacement.
- 9. If compressor is locked or drawing excessive current: This indicates a sealed system/compressor failure. Contact a qualified refrigeration engineer; do not attempt to open the sealed system yourself.
