Freezer not cooling at all; interior light may work but there is no cold air and food is thawing.
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the freezer before removing any panels. Do not attempt to open the sealed refrigeration system yourself.
- Listen for compressor: Plug the unit in and listen at the back. If the compressor is silent and you hear only a click every few minutes, suspect the start relay/PTC.
- Check compressor area: Remove the rear lower panel. Inspect the compressor start relay/PTC for burn marks or melted plastic. Replace if damaged.
- Feel compressor: Carefully touch the compressor shell. If it is very hot and not running, unplug immediately and replace the start device. If it remains silent with a new start device, the compressor may be failed.
- Check condenser fan (if fitted): Ensure the condenser fan runs when the compressor should be on. Replace the condenser fan motor if not operating.
Important: If the compressor runs but there is still no cooling (no frost on evaporator, no temperature drop), a sealed system issue (refrigerant leak or blockage) is likely. This requires a certified refrigeration technician.
