Possible Causes

Failed cabinet thermistor, Thermistor wiring harness damage, Corroded thermistor connector on control board

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the freezer before removing panels or handling wiring. Use insulated tools and avoid working on a wet floor.

Step-by-step checks:

  • Power cycle the unit: Unplug the freezer for 5 minutes, then plug it back in. If E1 returns immediately, continue.
  • Locate the cabinet thermistor: On most Magic Chef uprights, the thermistor is clipped to the evaporator cover or liner wall inside the freezer, usually behind a small plastic cover or near the top rear.
  • Inspect the sensor and wiring: Remove the inner panel if needed. Look for broken, pinched, or iced-over wires. Check the connector where the sensor harness plugs into the main control board (usually behind the upper front or rear control panel).
  • Test the thermistor: Disconnect the sensor from the harness. Using a multimeter set to resistance (ohms), measure across the two leads. At room temperature (~77°F / 25°C), most Magic Chef NTC thermistors should read roughly 5k–10kΩ (check your model’s tech sheet if available). If it reads open (OL) or 0Ω, it is defective.
  • Check harness continuity: With the unit still unplugged, test continuity from the thermistor connector at the cabinet to the connector at the control board. Repair or replace any damaged wiring.
  • Replace the thermistor if faulty: Unclip the old sensor, route the new one along the same path, and secure it away from moving parts or sharp edges. Reconnect to the control board.
  • Reassemble and test: Reinstall panels, plug the freezer back in, and allow 10–15 minutes. The E1 code should clear automatically if the sensor signal is normal.

When to call a technician: If the thermistor and wiring test good but E1 persists, the main control board may be defective and should be diagnosed or replaced by a professional.
