Magic Chef freezer shows E5 and may not cool properly; compressor may not start or may short-cycle.
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety warning: Unplug the freezer before accessing the compressor area. The compressor and nearby tubing can be very hot. Do not puncture or cut any sealed system lines.
Steps to check:
- Access the compressor compartment: Remove the rear lower access panel to expose the compressor, start relay, and overload protector.
- Listen for clicking: Plug the unit in briefly and listen. Repeated clicking every few seconds with no sustained compressor run often indicates a bad start relay or overload. Unplug again before proceeding.
- Remove the start relay and overload: Gently pull the plastic cover off the compressor terminals. Disconnect the PTC relay and overload protector.
- Shake test the relay: Lightly shake the PTC relay. If it rattles like broken pieces inside, it is likely bad.
- Measure relay resistance: Using a multimeter, check resistance across the relay terminals. An open circuit or burned smell indicates failure.
- Inspect the overload: Check for burn marks or a melted housing. Test continuity; an open overload at room temperature is defective.
- Replace faulty components: Install a new Magic Chef-compatible PTC start relay and overload protector, matching the original wiring orientation and terminal positions.
- Test compressor operation: Reinstall the cover, restore power, and observe. The compressor should start smoothly and run without repeated clicking. Monitor for cooling over several hours.
Important: If the new relay and overload still trip or the compressor draws excessive current and overheats, the compressor itself may be failing. This requires sealed system service by an EPA-certified technician.
