Magic Chef freezer displays E6 and may not cool; fans may run but compressor stays off.
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the freezer before removing the control board cover. Electronic boards are sensitive to static; avoid touching components unnecessarily.
Basic checks:
- Verify power supply: Confirm the outlet provides correct voltage (typically 120 VAC) using a meter. Check the freezer’s power cord and plug for damage.
- Inspect the control board: Access the main control board (often in a rear control box or behind the top front panel). Look for burnt spots, swollen capacitors, or melted connectors.
- Check output to compressor: With the unit plugged in and calling for cooling (set to coldest setting), a qualified person can carefully measure voltage at the compressor output terminals on the board. If there is no output despite proper input power and no other faults, the board relay is likely bad.
- Reset attempt: Some models allow a control reset by unplugging for 10 minutes and then holding specific buttons at power-up (refer to the tech sheet). If E6 returns, replacement is usually required.
- Replace the main control board: Label and photograph all wire connections. Remove mounting screws, swap in the new board, and reconnect wires exactly as before. Ensure all connectors are fully seated.
- Reassemble and test: Restore power and set the freezer to a normal temperature. Confirm that the compressor and fans start and that the E6 code is cleared.
Note: If you are not comfortable working around live voltage, have a professional perform the voltage checks and board replacement.
