Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the freezer before accessing the evaporator fan. Fan blades can be sharp and the evaporator fins can cut skin.
Steps:
- Listen for fan operation: When powered, you should normally hear the evaporator fan running when the compressor is on. If E8 is displayed and the fan is silent or grinding, proceed.
- Access the fan: Remove shelves and the rear interior panel to expose the evaporator and fan assembly.
- Check for ice buildup: Look for ice blocking the fan blades or shroud. If present, fully defrost the area using warm air (hair dryer on low, kept moving). Do not use sharp tools.
- Spin the fan by hand: With power still disconnected, gently spin the blades. They should move freely. If stiff or seized, the motor is likely bad.
- Test the fan motor: Disconnect the fan connector and measure resistance across the motor leads. An open circuit indicates a failed motor. Also inspect the harness for damage.
- Replace the evaporator fan motor: Remove mounting screws, transfer the fan blade to the new motor (if separate), and install the new motor in the same orientation. Reconnect the wiring harness.
- Reassemble and test: Reinstall the rear panel, restore power, and confirm the fan runs quietly and that the E8 code clears.
Note: If the fan tests good but does not receive voltage when it should, the main control board may be at fault.
