Possible Causes
Spoiled food residue, Mold growth on interior surfaces, Plastic components absorbing odors, Drain pan contamination
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the freezer before deep cleaning. Wear gloves and ensure good ventilation.
Steps:
- Remove all contents: Discard any spoiled or questionable food.
- Clean interior thoroughly: Wash all surfaces with a solution of baking soda and warm water (about 2 tablespoons per quart). Rinse and dry.
- Clean gaskets and crevices: Use a soft brush and mild detergent around the door gasket folds and seams.
- Check and clean drain pan: Access the drain pan under the unit and clean out any stagnant water or debris.
- Deodorize: Place an open box of baking soda or activated charcoal inside the freezer for several days to absorb residual odors.
Note: Persistent chemical or refrigerant-like odors accompanied by poor cooling may indicate a refrigerant leak and require professional service.
