Possible Causes
Door not sealing properly, Door frequently left open, Failed defrost heater or thermostat (frost on evaporator), Cracked or misaligned door gasket
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the freezer before defrosting. Do not use sharp tools to remove ice; they can puncture the liner or coils.
Steps:
- Fully defrost the unit: Remove food to a cooler. Leave the door open and allow ice to melt, or use a hair dryer on low to speed the process. Place towels to catch water.
- Inspect the door gasket: After defrosting, check the gasket for cracks, warping, or hardened sections. Replace if damaged.
- Check door alignment: Ensure the cabinet is level and the door hinges are tight. Adjust leveling feet so the door closes firmly and self-closes from a slight open position.
- Observe future frost pattern: After restarting, monitor the evaporator area (behind the rear panel) over several days. If frost builds heavily on the coil again, test the defrost heater and thermostat as described in the defrost-related entries.
- Change usage habits: Minimize door openings and avoid leaving the door ajar while loading.
Note: Persistent heavy frost despite a good gasket and working defrost system may indicate high humidity in the room or a liner crack allowing moist air in.
