Freezer interior temperature fluctuates widely; some days food is very hard, other days slightly soft.

Safety: Unplug the freezer before accessing controls or fans.

Steps:

• Verify with a thermometer: Place a freezer thermometer in the center and log temperatures over several days.
• Check fan operation: Listen for the evaporator fan cycling on whenever the compressor runs. If it stops intermittently or squeals, replace the fan motor.
• Test thermostat or sensors: For mechanical thermostats, check for dead spots by slowly turning the knob and listening for clicks. For electronic models, test thermistors as described in sensor-related entries.
• Inspect control board: Look for signs of overheating or loose connectors. Reseat connectors and, if issues persist, consider board replacement.

Note: Minor fluctuations are normal, but swings greater than 10°F on a regular basis indicate a control problem.
