Possible Causes
Open or shorted freezer thermistor, Damaged thermistor wiring harness, Corroded thermistor connector at control board, Failed electronic control misreading sensor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power at the wall outlet or breaker before removing panels or touching wiring.
- Power reset: Unplug the freezer for 5 minutes, then plug back in. If E1 returns, proceed with sensor checks.
- Locate thermistor: Inside the freezer, find the small plastic sensor (often clipped to the liner or behind a small cover). Consult your Maytag model's tech sheet for exact location.
- Inspect wiring: Check for broken, pinched, or chewed wires between the thermistor and the control board (often in the top or rear control housing).
- Test thermistor: Disconnect the thermistor and measure resistance with a multimeter. Compare to the resistance chart in the tech sheet. If open, shorted, or out of spec, replace the thermistor.
- Replace control if needed: If a known-good thermistor still triggers E1, the electronic control board may be defective and require replacement.
