Possible Causes
Open or shorted defrost thermistor clipped to evaporator, Loose thermistor connection at control, Damaged wiring in defrost circuit, Failed electronic control not reading defrost sensor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the freezer. Be cautious of sharp evaporator fins and any ice buildup.
- Manually defrost: Open the door and allow the unit to thaw for 24 hours with towels to catch water. This will restore airflow temporarily.
- Access evaporator: Remove the interior back panel of the freezer to expose the evaporator coil and defrost thermistor (usually clipped to the tubing).
- Inspect thermistor: Check that it is firmly clipped to the evaporator and not hanging loose. Look for damaged insulation or broken wires.
- Test thermistor: Disconnect and measure resistance at a known temperature (e.g., in ice water). Compare to the tech sheet. Replace if readings are out of spec.
- Check harness and control: If the thermistor is good, inspect wiring back to the control board. If wiring is intact, the electronic control board may need replacement.
