Possible Causes
Failed compressor start relay or PTC, Faulty compressor run capacitor, Loose wiring at compressor terminals, Defective inverter board (on variable-speed models)
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the freezer. The compressor area contains high voltage; if you are not experienced with electrical testing, contact a professional.
- Access compressor compartment: Remove the rear lower access panel to expose the compressor, start device, and wiring.
- Inspect start device: Remove the compressor start relay/overload from the compressor pins. Shake it gently; if it rattles or smells burnt, it is likely bad.
- Test relay and capacitor: Use a multimeter to check continuity of the relay and capacitance of the run capacitor (if present). Replace any components out of spec.
- Check wiring: Ensure all connectors are tight and not heat-damaged.
- Inverter models: If your Maytag uses an inverter board, inspect it for burn marks. Replacement of the inverter board may be required if faulty.
