Possible Causes
Failed evaporator fan motor, Ice obstruction around fan blades, Broken fan wiring harness, Faulty fan driver on main control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the freezer before accessing the fan area.
Steps:
- 1. Listen for fan operation: After closing the door for a few minutes, open it and press the door switch (if accessible). You should hear the evaporator fan running. If silent and F5 is present, proceed.
- 2. Access fan assembly: Remove drawers and the rear internal panel to expose the evaporator and fan shroud.
- 3. Check for ice blockage: Look for ice buildup around the fan blades or shroud. Carefully melt ice with a hair dryer on low, avoiding overheating plastic. Do not chip ice with sharp tools.
- 4. Spin the fan by hand: The fan should rotate freely. If stiff or seized, the motor is likely defective and should be replaced.
- 5. Electrical tests: With power off, disconnect the fan connector and measure motor resistance. An open circuit or very high resistance indicates a failed motor. Also inspect the harness for damage.
- 6. Replace fan motor: Install a new Miele evaporator fan motor, transfer the fan blade if separate, and reassemble the shroud and rear panel.
- 7. Control board check: If a known-good fan does not run and F5 persists, the fan driver circuit on the main PCB may be faulty and require board replacement.
