Possible Causes

Open‑circuit defrost heater element, Burnt defrost wiring harness, Failed defrost relay on main PCB, Thermal fuse in defrost circuit open (if fitted)

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Disconnect mains power before accessing the evaporator and heater. The heater can be very hot during operation.

Steps to resolve E9 (defrost heater circuit):

  • 1. Defrost and access: Empty the freezer and allow it to defrost. Remove the rear inner panel to expose the evaporator and defrost heater.
  • 2. Visual inspection: Look for breaks in the heater element, burn marks, or melted insulation on the wiring.
  • 3. Test heater continuity: With the freezer unplugged, disconnect the heater leads and measure resistance across the heater. An open circuit (OL) indicates a failed heater.
  • 4. Check thermal fuse (if present): Some New World models include a thermal fuse in series with the heater. Locate it along the heater wiring and test for continuity. Replace if open.
  • 5. Inspect wiring and connectors: Ensure all connectors are tight and free from corrosion. Repair or replace any burnt or brittle wires.
  • 6. Replace faulty components: Fit a new New World defrost heater and/or thermal fuse as required. Secure them in the original mounting points.
  • 7. PCB relay check: If heater and wiring are good but the heater never energizes, the main control PCB defrost relay may be faulty and require replacement.

Note: After repair, it may take several hours and a full defrost cycle for normal frost patterns and temperatures to stabilize.
