Possible Causes

Failed compressor start relay, Open or weak PTC start device, Tripped or defective overload protector, High compressor current draw due to internal compressor fault

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the freezer and allow the compressor area to cool before touching. The compressor and start components can be very hot.

Steps to address E5:

  • 1. Access compressor compartment: Remove the rear lower access panel to expose the compressor, start relay, and overload protector.
  • 2. Visual and smell check: Look for burned plastic on the start relay or overload. A burnt smell or melted housing indicates failure.
  • 3. Test start relay/PTC: Disconnect the relay from the compressor pins. Shake it gently; if it rattles or pieces are loose inside, replace it. You can also measure resistance according to the part spec; an open circuit is faulty.
  • 4. Test overload protector: With the unit unplugged, remove the overload and check continuity. It should read closed at room temperature. If open and not resetting after cooling, replace it.
  • 5. Check compressor windings: If you are comfortable with electrical testing, measure resistance between the compressor terminals (C, S, R). Extremely high or shorted readings may indicate a failing compressor, which requires professional replacement.
  • 6. Replace start components: Install an RCA-compatible start relay and overload protector if they test bad. Ensure they are firmly seated on the compressor pins and that the wiring is secure.
  • 7. Reassemble and test: Reinstall the rear panel, restore power, and listen for the compressor to start smoothly. Monitor for cooling and verify that E5 does not return.

Warning: If the compressor hums and clicks off even with new start components, the compressor itself may be locked or failing. This is a sealed-system repair and should be handled by a licensed technician.
