Possible Causes
Door left open or not sealing, Recent large warm food load, Failed evaporator fan motor, Low refrigerant charge or weak compressor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: No internal electrical work is required for basic checks, but unplug the unit before removing panels or testing components.
Steps to resolve high temperature alarm:
- 1. Check door seal: Inspect the RCA freezer door gasket for gaps, tears, or debris. Close the door on a sheet of paper; if it pulls out easily, the seal may be weak or the door misaligned. Clean the gasket with warm soapy water and ensure it is fully seated.
- 2. Verify door closure: Make sure shelves or food packages are not preventing the door from closing fully. Rearrange items to allow the door to seal.
- 3. Allow recovery time: If you recently added a large amount of unfrozen food or had a power outage, the alarm may sound until the temperature drops. Allow 12–24 hours for full recovery while keeping the door closed as much as possible.
- 4. Check evaporator fan: Open the door and listen for the fan running when the compressor is on (door switch may need to be held closed). If the fan is silent or noisy, the evaporator fan motor may be failing.
- 5. Inspect condenser coils: Unplug the unit and pull it away from the wall. Clean dust from the condenser coils and fan (if present) with a brush and vacuum to improve cooling efficiency.
- 6. Monitor temperature: Use a freezer thermometer to verify actual temperature. If it remains above 10°F (-12°C) after 24 hours with the door closed, further diagnosis of the sealed system or compressor is needed.
When to call a technician: If the compressor runs constantly but the freezer never reaches proper temperature, there may be a refrigerant leak or weak compressor, which requires professional service.
