Possible Causes

Failed freezer evaporator fan motor, Ice buildup blocking fan blades, Broken or seized fan blade, Open or shorted fan motor wiring, Defective main PCB fan driver

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the freezer before accessing the fan area.

  • Listen for fan operation: With the door switch held closed (before unplugging), you should normally hear the evaporator fan running when the compressor is on. If silent or grinding, suspect the fan.
  • Access the fan: Remove freezer drawers and the rear interior panel. The evaporator fan is mounted above or in front of the evaporator coil.
  • Check for ice obstruction: Look for ice buildup around the fan shroud and blades. If present, defrost the area with a hair dryer on low (do not overheat plastic) or by leaving the unit unplugged until ice melts.
  • Inspect fan motor and blade: Spin the blade by hand; it should turn freely. Check for cracks or wobble. Inspect wiring and connector for damage.
  • Test fan motor: With the motor disconnected, measure resistance across the motor terminals. An open circuit indicates a bad motor. If comfortable and safe, you can also apply appropriate DC voltage per service manual to confirm operation.
  • Replace fan motor: Remove mounting screws, transfer the fan blade to the new Samsung evaporator fan motor, install the new motor, and reconnect the harness.
  • Reassemble and test: Reinstall the evaporator cover, ensuring foam seals are intact. Restore power and verify the fan runs and 21E clears. If the fan tests good but does not receive power, the PCB may be faulty.
