Possible Causes
Defective defrost sensor, Loose or corroded sensor connector, Wiring harness damage in cabinet, Failed main control board defrost circuit
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Important: Unplug the appliance before any disassembly.
- Soft reset: Disconnect power for 5 minutes, then restore. If 5E reappears, continue.
- Check for frost pattern: Remove freezer drawers and rear panel. If the evaporator is a solid block of ice, the defrost system is not working correctly.
- Inspect defrost sensor: Locate the sensor on the evaporator coil. Check for cracks, discoloration, or loose mounting. Verify the connector is tight.
- Test sensor resistance: With the sensor at room temperature, measure resistance. Replace if readings are out of Samsung's specified range.
- Check harness continuity: If you have access to both ends of the harness, test continuity from sensor connector to PCB connector. Repair or replace harness if open.
- Replace sensor if faulty: Install a new Samsung-compatible defrost sensor, secure it to the coil, and re-insulate as originally.
- Reassemble and monitor: After reassembly, restore power and observe operation over 24–48 hours. Persistent 5E with a good sensor suggests a PCB issue requiring professional service.
