Possible Causes

Defective compressor start relay or PTC, Faulty inverter module (on inverter-driven models), Overheated or seized compressor, Loose or burnt compressor wiring terminals

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the freezer. Work carefully around the compressor and mains wiring. Do not attempt sealed system repairs without proper certification.

  • 1. Access compressor compartment: Remove the rear lower service panel to expose the compressor, start device, and control electronics.
  • 2. Inspect start device: On conventional compressors, check the start relay/PTC and overload protector mounted on the compressor terminals for signs of burning, cracking, or melting.
  • 3. Check wiring: Ensure all spade connectors are tight and free of corrosion. Repair any burnt or loose connections.
  • 4. Test start device: With the device removed and the unit unplugged, measure resistance across the PTC/relay according to service data. Replace if readings are out of spec or if there is visible damage.
  • 5. Inverter models: If your SMEG freezer uses an inverter board, inspect it for burnt components or bulging capacitors. Do not touch heatsinks or components if recently powered—they may be hot.
  • 6. Replace faulty module: Install the correct SMEG start relay/overload or inverter module. Ensure proper orientation on compressor terminals.
  • 7. Test operation: Refit the rear panel, restore power, and listen for the compressor starting smoothly. Monitor temperature over several hours.

Important: If the compressor hums and clicks off, or draws excessive current even with a new start device, the compressor itself may be mechanically seized and will require professional sealed system service.
