Freezer shows E8 and may run continuously or not reach set temperature; fan operation may be abnormal.
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the freezer before accessing the fan. Fan blades and metal edges can be sharp—wear gloves.
- 1. Access evaporator fan: Remove freezer drawers and the rear inner panel to expose the evaporator and fan assembly.
- 2. Check for ice blockage: Inspect the fan blades and surrounding shroud for ice buildup. If present, fully defrost the area by leaving the unit unplugged with doors open. Do not chip ice with sharp tools.
- 3. Spin test: Gently spin the fan by hand. It should rotate freely without grinding or resistance. If it is stiff or seized, the motor is likely faulty.
- 4. Electrical test: With the unit unplugged, disconnect the fan and measure resistance across the motor terminals. An open circuit indicates a failed motor. Also inspect the wiring harness for damage.
- 5. Replace fan motor: Remove mounting screws or clips, swap in the correct SMEG evaporator fan motor, and reconnect wiring. Ensure the fan blades are correctly oriented and not rubbing the shroud.
- 6. Reassemble and test: Refit the rear panel, restore power, and listen for the fan running once the compressor starts. Confirm that E8 does not reappear.
Note: If the fan motor tests good but does not receive voltage during operation, the main control board or fan driver circuit may be defective and require professional diagnosis.
