Possible Causes
Dirty condenser coils, Failing condenser fan motor, Loss of refrigerant charge, Weak compressor, Door gasket leaks causing warm air infiltration
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the freezer before cleaning coils or working near the compressor. Coils and metal edges can be sharp.
- 1. Check temperature setting: Confirm the set point is around -18°C and not accidentally raised.
- 2. Clean condenser coils: Access the rear or bottom of the unit and vacuum dust from the condenser coils using a brush attachment. For built-in SMEG models, remove the front grille if necessary.
- 3. Verify condenser fan operation: With power restored, ensure the fan near the compressor runs whenever the compressor is on. If it does not, replace the condenser fan motor.
- 4. Inspect door gasket: Look for tears, gaps, or hardened sections in the door seal. Close a sheet of paper in the door at various points; if it pulls out easily, the gasket may need replacement or the door may need adjustment.
- 5. Check for frost pattern: Remove the inner rear panel and inspect the evaporator. A uniform light frost is normal; heavy ice or only a small section frosted suggests defrost or sealed system issues requiring a technician.
