Possible Causes

Overheated compressor due to poor ventilation, Faulty compressor overload protector, High ambient temperature exceeding design limits

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety warning: Unplug the freezer before touching the compressor or electrical components. The compressor can be very hot.

Steps to address E5:

  • Check ventilation: Ensure there is adequate clearance around the freezer (typically at least several inches at the sides, back, and top as specified by Summit). Remove any items blocking the rear grille or toe kick.
  • Clean condenser coils: If accessible, vacuum dust and debris from the condenser coils and compressor area at the back or underneath the unit. Use a soft brush attachment to avoid damaging fins.
  • Verify ambient temperature: Make sure the freezer is not installed in a location hotter than the rated ambient (e.g., unconditioned garage in summer). Excessive heat can trigger compressor protection.
  • Inspect the compressor overload device: With power disconnected, remove the compressor terminal cover. Check the overload protector and start device for signs of burning or cracking. Do not touch bare terminals.
  • Replace overload/start device if suspect: Install a Summit-compatible compressor overload and start relay if the original is damaged or if the compressor repeatedly trips and cools only briefly. Match the part to the compressor model.
  • Restore power and monitor: Plug the freezer back in and listen for normal compressor start-up. The E5 code should clear once the compressor runs within normal temperature limits. Monitor for several hours.

Important: If the compressor is extremely hot, makes loud clicking or humming, or fails to start even with a new overload device, the compressor itself may be failing and requires professional service.
