Possible Causes
Spoiled food residues in hidden areas, Mold growth in door gasket folds or drain, Plastic parts absorbing odors, Rarely, refrigerant oil odor from leak near evaporator
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the freezer before deep cleaning. If you suspect a refrigerant leak (oily residue, hissing), contact a professional.
- Remove all contents: Discard spoiled food. Remove shelves, baskets, and drawers.
- Thorough cleaning: Wash interior surfaces, shelves, and baskets with a solution of baking soda and warm water. Pay attention to corners and seams.
- Clean gasket and drain: Pull back the door gasket folds and clean thoroughly. Flush the defrost drain with warm water and mild disinfectant.
- Deodorize: Place an open box of baking soda or activated charcoal inside and run the freezer empty for several days.
- Check for oily spots: Inspect the evaporator area and rear piping for oily residue, which can indicate a refrigerant leak. If found, do not attempt sealed-system repairs yourself.
Test: After cleaning and deodorizing, re-evaluate odors over several days of normal use.
