Possible Causes
Normal automatic defrost cycle, Stuck in defrost due to heater or sensor fault, Control board not exiting defrost
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Note: On many Toshiba freezers, dF simply indicates that the unit is in a scheduled defrost cycle and is not an error.
Steps:
- 1. Observe duration: A normal defrost cycle typically lasts 15–30 minutes. If dF clears and cooling resumes, no repair is needed.
- 2. Check temperature: If dF remains on for more than 1 hour and the interior warms significantly, unplug the freezer and inspect the defrost heater and sensor (see E3 and E8 procedures).
- 3. Reset control: After inspection, unplug the unit for 10 minutes to reset the control. If it immediately returns to dF and does not cool, the main PCB may be stuck in defrost mode.
- 4. Replace faulty components: Repair or replace the defrost heater, defrost sensor, or main control PCB as indicated by testing.
