Freezer displays EA and may not maintain set temperature; compressor cycles irregularly.
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
High-voltage safety: Unplug the freezer before touching compressor wiring. Compressor diagnosis often requires a professional; proceed only if you are experienced.
Steps:
- 1. Check ventilation: Ensure the condenser at the back or bottom is not blocked by dust or objects. Clean the condenser coils with a soft brush and vacuum.
- 2. Listen to compressor: Restore power briefly and listen. Repeated clicking without sustained running suggests overload tripping.
- 3. Inspect start components (non-inverter): Unplug again. Remove the start relay/overload protector from the compressor terminals. Shake the relay gently; if it rattles or smells burnt, replace it with a Toshiba-specified start device.
- 4. Measure compressor winding resistance: Check resistance between terminals and to ground. Very low resistance or a short to ground indicates a failed compressor.
- 5. Check condenser fan (if equipped): Ensure the condenser fan motor runs freely and is not obstructed, as poor airflow can cause overcurrent.
- 6. PCB current sensing: If mechanical parts are good but EA persists, the main PCB's current sensor may be faulty and require replacement.
Note: Compressor replacement and refrigerant work must be done by a licensed refrigeration technician.
