Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the freezer before accessing the evaporator area. Edges of metal panels and fins are sharp; wear cut-resistant gloves.
Steps:
- Defrost first: If the evaporator area is heavily iced, unplug the unit and allow it to defrost with the door open for several hours. Place towels to catch water.
- Access the evaporator: Remove baskets and the rear interior panel (usually held by Phillips screws). Carefully pull the panel forward to expose the evaporator coil.
- Locate the sensor: The evaporator sensor is typically clipped to the evaporator tubing or mounted near the coil in a small plastic housing.
- Inspect wiring: Look for brittle, cracked, or ice-damaged wires. Ensure the sensor is firmly clipped and not hanging loose.
- Test the sensor: Disconnect the sensor and measure resistance with a multimeter. Compare to the service chart if available; if it reads open or short, replace it.
- Reconnect and secure: Install a new evaporator temperature sensor if needed, route wiring away from sharp edges, and reassemble the panel.
- Control board check: If a new sensor does not clear E2, the main control board may be misreading the sensor and require replacement.
Note: Do not bend or puncture the evaporator tubing; this will cause a non-repairable refrigerant leak.
