Possible Causes

Defective ambient thermistor, Sensor knocked loose from mounting near control panel, Broken or corroded sensor wiring, Failed control board sensor channel

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the freezer before removing the control panel or top cover.

How to proceed:

  • Locate the ambient sensor: On many Whynter freezers, the ambient sensor is near the control panel or air intake grille, often behind the front control fascia or top trim.
  • Remove control fascia: Carefully remove screws or clips holding the control panel. Gently pull it forward to access the wiring behind.
  • Identify the sensor: Look for a small probe or plastic-encased sensor on a two-wire harness labeled as ambient or room sensor.
  • Inspect and reseat: Check for loose connectors or corrosion. Unplug and replug the sensor connector to clean contacts.
  • Test resistance: Use a multimeter to measure sensor resistance at room temperature. Compare to expected NTC values. Replace if open, shorted, or significantly off-spec.
  • Replace sensor if needed: Install an OEM Whynter ambient temperature sensor. Route the harness away from hot components and sharp edges.
  • Control board evaluation: If the sensor tests good but E3 persists, the main control board may be faulty and require replacement.

Tip: Ensure the freezer is installed in a room within the manufacturer’s recommended ambient temperature range; extreme environments can also cause sensor-related errors.
