Possible Causes
Failed evaporator fan motor, Ice obstruction around fan blades, Loose or damaged fan wiring, Faulty fan driver circuit on control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Disconnect power before accessing the evaporator fan. Fan blades can start unexpectedly and cause injury.
How to fix:
- Access fan: Remove baskets and the interior rear panel to expose the evaporator fan assembly.
- Check for ice buildup: Look for ice blocking the fan blades or shroud. If present, defrost the unit completely by unplugging and leaving doors open until all ice melts. Address underlying defrost issues if ice returns quickly.
- Spin test: Gently spin the fan blades by hand. If they are stiff, grinding, or seized, the motor is likely bad and should be replaced.
- Inspect wiring: Verify the fan harness is fully connected and not damaged. Repair or replace any frayed wires.
- Replace fan motor: Remove mounting screws, disconnect the harness, and install a new OEM Whynter evaporator fan motor. Ensure blades are correctly oriented and not rubbing the shroud.
- Control board check: If a new fan does not run and E8 persists, the control board’s fan output may be defective.
Note: Do not bend or puncture the evaporator coil while working near it.
