Persistent Odor Contamination
Freezer interior has a strong, unpleasant odor even after cleaning
Advertisements
Possible Causes
Spoiled food residue in hidden areas, Mold or mildew in gasket folds, Contaminated drain pan, Plastic liner absorbed odors
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the freezer before deep cleaning. Use non-abrasive cleaners.
Steps:
- Remove contents: Discard any spoiled items. Remove shelves and baskets for separate cleaning.
- Clean interior: Wash all interior surfaces with a solution of baking soda and warm water. Rinse and dry thoroughly.
- Clean gasket: Pull back the door gasket folds and clean with mild detergent. Dry completely to prevent mold.
- Drain pan: Access the rear and remove the drain pan if possible. Clean and disinfect it, then reinstall.
- Deodorize: Place an open box of baking soda or activated charcoal inside the empty freezer for 24–48 hours before restocking.
Note: Severe odor absorption in the liner may never fully dissipate; in extreme cases, liner replacement or unit replacement may be the only cure.
