Internal Defrost Drain Freeze-Up
Water or ice buildup on the bottom of the freezer compartment
Advertisements
Possible Causes
Partially clogged drain, Insufficient defrost heater coverage near drain, Door left open causing heavy frost, Misaligned drain trough
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the freezer before defrosting or removing panels.
Steps:
- Manual defrost: Remove food to a cooler, unplug the unit, and leave the door open until all ice melts from the bottom and around the evaporator.
- Clear drain: After ice melts, locate the drain hole under the evaporator and clear any debris with a soft brush or pipe cleaner. Flush with warm water.
- Check trough alignment: Ensure the drain trough slopes correctly toward the drain hole and is not warped.
- Reassemble and monitor: Restore power and monitor for recurrence. If the problem returns quickly, the defrost heater or sensor may need inspection.
Note: Avoid using hair dryers inside the cabinet; excessive heat can warp plastic liners.
