Possible Causes

Dust accumulation on heat exchanger and burners, Debris on electric motor windings, Slight overheating due to restricted airflow, Wiring insulation overheating near Alpha control board

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: A mild dusty smell for the first few cycles of the season is common. However, if the smell is strong, acrid, or accompanied by smoke, turn off the furnace immediately.

  • Clean around furnace: Vacuum dust and debris from around the furnace cabinet and return air area. Do not store items against the furnace.
  • Replace filter: Ensure a clean filter is installed to promote proper airflow.
  • Inspect wiring (if smell persists): With power off, look for discolored or melted wires near the control board and blower motor.

If the burning smell continues after several hours of operation or you see smoke, contact a technician promptly.
