Alpha Overheating / Limit Cycling

Furnace short cycles: starts, runs for a few minutes, then shuts off and restarts frequently.

Possible Causes

Dirty or restrictive air filter, Closed or blocked supply registers, Undersized ductwork causing high static pressure, Weak Alpha blower motor or failing blower capacitor

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Turn off power before removing panels or filters.

  • Replace filter: Install a new filter of the correct size and MERV rating recommended by Alpha. Avoid overly restrictive high-MERV filters unless the system is designed for them.
  • Open registers: Make sure at least 80% of supply registers are fully open and not blocked by furniture or rugs.
  • Check blower performance: With thermostat fan set to ON, verify strong airflow from vents. Weak airflow may indicate a failing blower motor or capacitor.
  • Monitor operation: After corrections, run the furnace and see if cycle length increases and comfort improves.

If short cycling continues, duct design or internal furnace issues should be evaluated by a professional.
