Possible Causes
Shorted thermostat cable, Shorted outdoor condenser contactor coil (in combo systems), Miswired humidifier or accessory, Shorted gas valve coil
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off power before replacing fuses or working on low-voltage wiring. Never bypass the fuse with a larger size or jumper.
Steps to check:
- Inspect thermostat wiring: Look for bare or pinched thermostat wires where they pass through sheet metal or around the furnace cabinet. Repair damaged insulation and secure with grommets.
- Isolate circuits: Disconnect thermostat wires from the R, W, Y, G, and C terminals. Install a new correct-rated fuse. Restore power. If the fuse holds, reconnect circuits one at a time to identify which call (heat, cool, fan) causes the short.
- Check accessories: If the short occurs when a humidifier, air cleaner, or outdoor unit is connected, inspect those components and their wiring for shorts to ground.
- Replace faulty component: Once the shorted device or cable is identified, repair or replace it before restoring normal operation.
