Possible Causes

Dust accumulation on heat exchanger and burners, Overheated wiring insulation, Foreign objects in furnace cabinet

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: If you see smoke or flames, shut off power and gas and call emergency services.

Steps:

  • Initial burn-off: A mild burning dust smell is common the first few cycles of the season. It should dissipate within an hour.
  • Clean interior: With power off, remove panels and gently vacuum dust from accessible surfaces around the blower and burner area. Do not disturb wiring or gas components.
  • Inspect wiring: Look for discolored or melted insulation on wires, especially near the burners and heat exchanger. If found, do not operate the furnace until repaired.
  • Check for foreign objects: Remove any plastic, paper, or other debris that may have fallen into the cabinet.

Note: Persistent strong burning odors require professional inspection.
