Furnace produces a burning smell or plastic odor when running

Safety: If you smell burning plastic or see smoke, turn off power immediately and do not use the furnace until inspected.

Steps:

• Initial use: A slight burning dust smell is normal for the first few hours of operation after a long off period. This should dissipate.
• Clear area: Ensure no items are stored on or against the Buderus furnace or flue pipes.
• Inspect blower: With power off, check the blower motor area for signs of overheating (discolored housing, melted insulation).
• Check wiring: Look for scorched or melted wires at the control board and power connections.

Persistent strong odors or any visible smoke require immediate professional inspection.
