Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power before accessing the blower compartment. The blower wheel can start unexpectedly if power is on.
- Check for airflow: With a call for heat or fan ON at the thermostat, verify if any air is coming from the supply registers. If not, the blower is not running.
- Inspect blower compartment: Remove the blower door. Look for burned wiring, a strong electrical smell, or a seized blower wheel.
- For PSC motors: Locate the run capacitor (metal can with two or three terminals). If it is bulged or leaking oil, it should be replaced with the same µF and voltage rating.
- For ECM motors (common on newer Carrier furnaces): Check the multi-pin harness at the motor module for secure connection. Do not attempt to disassemble the ECM module; replacement is typically required if failed.
Because blower motor replacement often requires removing the entire blower assembly and balancing the wheel, this repair is usually best left to a professional.
