Possible Causes
Worn blower motor bearings, loose blower wheel on shaft, failing inducer motor bearings, debris in inducer wheel
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power before reaching into any moving parts.
- Identify noise source: Remove the blower door and briefly run the furnace to determine if the noise comes from the large indoor blower or the smaller inducer motor.
- Inspect blower wheel: With power off, spin the blower wheel by hand. It should rotate smoothly without grinding. Check that the set screw on the blower hub is tight on the motor shaft.
- Check for debris: Look inside the inducer housing (if accessible) for foreign objects rubbing the wheel.
Motor or inducer replacement is typically a professional repair, as it may require rebalancing and sealing the combustion system.
