Possible Causes

Weak hot surface ignitor, Low gas pressure to furnace, Dirty burners causing poor flame carryover, Flame sensor not detecting flame reliably

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off power and gas before working on burners or ignitor.

Steps to check:

  • Inspect and test ignitor: Remove the hot surface ignitor and visually inspect for cracks. Measure resistance with a multimeter; compare to Coleman specifications (often 40–90 ohms depending on style). Replace if out of range.
  • Clean burners: Remove the burner rack and brush off rust and debris. Ensure burner ports and crossover channels are clear so flame can travel quickly from burner to burner.
  • Clean flame sensor: Polish the flame sensor rod with fine steel wool and reinstall.
  • Gas pressure check: A technician should measure inlet and manifold gas pressure with a manometer and adjust at the gas valve if needed.

After cleaning and replacing worn parts, reset the furnace by cycling power. If lockouts continue, the gas valve or control board may require replacement.
