Possible Causes

Shorted flame sensor to ground, Faulty Comfortmaker control board flame circuit, Gas valve leaking slightly, Miswired burner ground

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Danger: This code can indicate a gas valve leaking or flame present when it should not be. If you smell gas, shut off gas at the manual shutoff and call a professional immediately.

Steps:

  • Turn off power and gas: Use the service switch and manual gas shutoff.
  • Inspect flame sensor: Remove the flame sensor and check for damage or insulation breakdown. Ensure the ceramic insulator is intact and the rod is not touching metal when installed.
  • Check wiring: Inspect the flame sensor wire from the sensor to the control board for cuts, melted insulation, or pinched spots against the burner box.
  • Verify burner ground: Ensure the burner assembly and control board ground wire are securely fastened to clean metal.
  • Restore power (gas still off): Turn power on with gas off and call for heat. If the board still senses flame (code 22) with no gas, the control board is likely faulty.

When to call a technician: Immediately if there is any suspicion of a leaking gas valve or if code 22 persists after sensor and wiring checks. Gas valve and board diagnostics require professional tools.
