Possible Causes

Accumulated dust on heat exchanger and burners, Long off-season without operation

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: A mild burning dust smell for the first few heating cycles can be normal. However, if the smell is strong, smoky, or accompanied by visible smoke, turn off the furnace and investigate.

Steps:

  • Run furnace: Allow the furnace to run for 15–30 minutes with a few windows slightly open to ventilate. The smell should diminish.
  • Inspect for debris: With power off, remove the burner access panel and check for any foreign objects or heavy dust buildup. Vacuum around (not inside) the burner area carefully.
  • Check filter: Replace the air filter to ensure good airflow and dust capture.

Note: If the smell persists or smells like burning plastic or wiring, shut down the furnace and have it inspected.
