Possible Causes
Failed inducer motor, Seized inducer wheel, Blocked inducer housing or flue collar, Faulty inducer capacitor (if equipped)
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power and shut off gas before working on the inducer assembly.
- 1. Listen to the inducer: When calling for heat (with panels on and power restored), note whether the inducer hums, starts then stalls, or does not run at all. Then turn power back off.
- 2. Inspect inducer wheel: Remove the inducer access cover if present. Check for debris, rust, or water in the housing. Spin the wheel by hand; it should rotate freely without scraping.
- 3. Check venting and condensate (condensing models): Ensure the vent pipe is clear and the condensate trap and drain are not blocked, which can flood the inducer.
- 4. Test inducer motor power: With power on and a call for heat (use extreme caution or have a technician do this), verify that the control board is sending 120 VAC to the inducer motor leads. If voltage is present but the motor does not run, the motor is likely failed.
- 5. Replace inducer assembly: If the motor is seized or noisy, replace the inducer assembly with the correct Dettson part. Disconnect wiring, remove mounting screws, transfer the gasket or install a new one, and reinstall.
- 6. Test operation: Restore power and gas, then run a full heating cycle to confirm E8 is cleared and draft is stable.
