Possible Causes

Contaminated flame sensor, Poor burner ground, Weak flame due to partially blocked burner, Faulty control board flame circuit

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Turn off electrical power and gas before opening the furnace cabinet.

  • 1. Clean the flame sensor: Remove the burner access panel. Locate the flame sensor (thin metal rod in front of a burner). Remove the mounting screw and gently clean the rod with fine steel wool until shiny. Wipe with a dry cloth and reinstall.
  • 2. Check ground connections: Verify the burner rack and gas valve have solid metal-to-metal contact with the furnace chassis. Tighten any loose screws and clean off rust or paint that may prevent grounding.
  • 3. Inspect burners: Remove burners if accessible and check for rust, debris, or spider webs in the burner ports. Clean with a soft brush and compressed air. Reinstall ensuring proper alignment with the orifices.
  • 4. Verify flame coverage: After reassembly, restore power and gas, then call for heat. Through the sight glass, confirm that flame is steady and fully engulfs the flame sensor.
  • 5. Control board check: If the flame is strong and sensor is clean but E2 persists, the integrated furnace control (IFC) flame-sense circuit may be faulty. This requires board replacement and should be done by a licensed technician.
