Possible Causes
Shorted or contaminated flame sensor, Flame sensor wire shorted to ground, Faulty control board flame sensing circuit, Induced draft pulling flame from another appliance into burner area
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power and gas supply before working on the burner compartment.
Steps to check:
- Clean flame sensor: Remove and gently clean the flame sensor rod with fine abrasive pad. Reinstall and ensure it is properly positioned in the burner flame path.
- Inspect wiring: Follow the flame sensor wire back to the control board. Look for damaged insulation, pinched wires, or contact with metal surfaces that could cause a short.
- Check for stray flame sources: Verify no other gas appliances are venting into the same area in a way that could cause a flame to be drawn into the furnace burner compartment.
- Reset power: Restore power and call for heat. If the board still detects flame when off, the control board may have a failed flame sense circuit and should be replaced by a professional.
