Possible Causes
Loose blower wheel on shaft, Worn blower motor bearings, Loose furnace panels or ductwork, Noisy draft inducer motor on Gibson furnace
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power before tightening or adjusting any components.
Steps to check:
- Panel screws: Tighten all access panel screws and any visible sheet metal screws on the furnace cabinet.
- Blower wheel: Remove blower assembly and check that the set screw on the blower wheel hub is tight on the motor shaft. Realign if the wheel has shifted.
- Motor bearings: Spin the blower wheel by hand. If you hear grinding or feel roughness, the motor bearings are likely worn and the motor should be replaced.
- Inducer noise: If noise comes from the inducer area, the inducer motor or wheel may be failing and should be replaced as an assembly.
