Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off power and gas before removing venting or panels. Use caution on ladders or roofs.
Steps:
- Check vent pipes: Inspect the PVC intake and exhaust terminations outside. Remove any obstructions (snow, ice, leaves, bird nests). Ensure screens are not clogged.
- Inspect inducer motor: With power off, spin the inducer wheel by hand; it should turn freely without grinding. Look for water in the inducer housing (condensate backup). If noisy or seized, the inducer assembly may need replacement.
- Verify pressure switch tubing and ports: Remove tubing from both the pressure switch and inducer port. Clean the inducer port with a small drill bit or paper clip (do not enlarge the hole). Replace brittle or cracked tubing.
- Test pressure switch operation: With a multimeter, check continuity across the pressure switch terminals. Call for heat and watch: the switch should close (show continuity) a few seconds after the inducer starts. If it never closes, replace the pressure switch with the correct Goodman part.
If venting and tubing are clear and a new pressure switch does not close, the inducer may not be generating enough draft or the heat exchanger may be restricted. Have a licensed technician perform further diagnostics and a combustion safety check.
