Possible Causes
Weak hot surface ignitor, Dirty or misaligned burners, Low inlet gas pressure, Faulty gas valve coil
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off gas and power before working on burners or gas valve.
Steps:
- Observe ignition sequence: Restore power and gas, then call for heat. Watch through the sight glass: inducer starts, ignitor glows, gas valve clicks, then either flame appears or not.
- Check ignitor: If the ignitor glows dimly or not at all, test its resistance (typically 40–90 ohms for many Goodman HSIs). Replace if open or out of spec.
- Clean burners: Remove and clean burners and crossover ports to ensure flame spreads quickly across all burners.
- Gas valve and pressure: If the ignitor glows strongly but no flame appears, the gas valve or gas pressure may be at fault. This requires a technician with a manometer to test and adjust.
After any corrections, power-cycle the furnace to clear lockout. If lockout recurs, have a professional evaluate the gas train and combustion.
