Possible Causes
Dirty flame sensor, Poor burner ground, Low microamp flame signal, Faulty control board flame circuit
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off power and gas before removing flame sensor or burners.
Steps:
- Clean flame sensor: Remove the sensor and gently clean the rod with fine steel wool. Do not sand excessively. Reinstall and ensure the ceramic insulator is intact.
- Check ground path: Ensure the burner rack is firmly screwed to the furnace chassis and that there is a solid metal-to-metal contact (no heavy rust or paint). Tighten screws.
- Inspect wiring: Check the flame sensor wire and connector at the control board for corrosion or looseness.
- Measure flame signal (advanced): A technician can measure flame rectification current (microamps DC). If low, they may adjust or replace components.
If cleaning and grounding do not resolve the issue, the control board may need replacement. Have a professional confirm before replacing expensive parts.
